The book is great as a travelogue and for the investment insights he relates based on firsthand observation.

I enjoyed reading the book and someone who likes the travel and investment genre will like it. But if you are purely looking for inspiration on world travel and overland adventure, look elsewhere.
In all, I liked that the book mixed his adventure travel with investing insights. His opinion of Greenspan was shockingly blunt and harsh – perhaps the first time I’ve heard anyone slam the man so directly. It could be that the financial meltdown and the unmasking of the amoral greediness of the financier community has tainted and jaded my view towards investment bankers and financiers that made it sour.
Furthermore, besides the corruption of leaders of other countries, there is the sadly the corruption of our own officials in particular Africa. Our tax monies are being spent on their Mercedes, security guards, and flying in people for conferences – conferences to find ways to spend the money wisely and to get even more. I really liked this book, a great mix of a travel-log and economic and political commentary. As a former hedge fund investor Jim Rogers provides some fascinating insights on countries’ economies and situations having traveled to them himself on the ground.

Read this in 2020 and many of the observations still seem relevant. A great travel book with a lot to learn from it especially the importance of adventure. If you like either of these, you will probably like this book. A fun listen while doing a much, much smaller scale road trip myself.
As you journey around the world there will be times you may envy Jim Rogers, while at others you may be thankful you were not with him, but always you will have to know what he is going to be doing on the next page. Rogers reveals to you the wonders of places many of us have dreamed of visiting but never will. He does the same for places many have never even known existed. His is not the tourist view, but the genuine article with both the roses and the thorns carefully examined. As in his earlier classic, “Investment Biker,” you may even get a few investment ideas, but Rogers never tells you what to do or not do.
